Is our youth-culture accepting e-cigarette use as the norm? Compared to regular cigarette use, vaping has become another option.
Vaping Addiction for the Young
Why is vaping becoming so popular compared to cigarettes? Vaping is more popular than cigarettes because cigarette smoke is seen as dirty and messy. A lot of other businesses have restricted cigarettes from restaurants and malls because health and the environment is now a priority. It is not viewed as a fashionable habit as it was in the 1950’s.
Dual Users: Toxic Chemicals
Even though vaping has been seen as an alternative to smoking or to dual-users, vaping showed higher levels of nicotine and many of the toxic chemicals, including two heavy metals and some carcinogens. That’s worrying because more than half of e-cigarette users are dual-users, according to a CDC report from 2016.
Are E-Cigarettes Unsafe?
A study was done to analyze the urine of smokers and vapers. Even though vaping is unregulated, the test showed exposure to toxicity. But, smokers also have toxicity in there urine. However, dual users are at higher risk for heavy metal and carcinogens. The study also showed that vapor users contained heavier metals and irritating chemicals. Robert Strongin, an organic chemist at Portland State University, communicates that we don’t really know how unsafe e-cigarettes are.
Vaping is Another Option?
Most people who vape, used to be heavy smokers. Thinking that e-cigarettes will help relieve with the addiction of smoking, vaping is another option. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at urine samples:
Unsurprisingly, the people who didn’t smoke and didn’t vape showed the lowest levels of these toxic chemicals in their urine. People who used e-cigarettes had roughly 19 percent more lead, 23 percent more of the heavy metal cadmium, 20 percent more pyrene (a biomarker of carcinogens that are linked to heart attacks), and 66 percent more acrylonitrile in their urine.
Could These Toxic Chemicals Eventually Cause Cancer?
We don’t really know if these toxic chemicals will cause damaging effects. “The e-cigarette vapor increases inflammation and disables cells that protect lung tissue. Harming these cells makes them vulnerable to dust, bacteria, and allergens that might lead to incurable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the researchers say.” The lungs become vulnerable and influence the immunity of the healthy lung tissue.
